Nuggets point guard Reggie Jackson is picking up his $5.25 million player option for the 2024-25 season as expected, a league source confirmed to The Denver Post. Jackson, 34, will return for the second and final year of his contract. He came to Denver in February 2023 after reaching a contract buyout with the Charlotte Hornets and won his first career NBA championship five months later as a reserve for his hometown team.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is trying new strategies to curb traffic fatalities on his city’s streets in a pilot program aimed at slowing down drivers who speed along major thoroughfares. Denver has recorded 27 traffic deaths so far this year, with the latest occurring last week on June 17. Last year, 83 people died, according to the city, despite officials launching the Vision Zero initiative several years ago, setting a goal of reaching zero traffic deaths by 2030. On Monday, Johnston announced the rollout of new approaches — initially along stretches of Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue — that include investing in more speed limit and speed feedback signs, expanded signal timing to give pedestrians extra moments to cross the street and more speed enforcement, such as ticketing. The city aims to cut the number of traffic fatalities by half over two years.

The Regional Transportation District’s southbound E line resumed normal service Monday afternoon after reports of smoking light rail electric lines near Englewood, according to South Metro Fire Rescue. An argument at Lake Pueblo State Park on Friday led to a fatal double shooting, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Dustyn Courtney, 29, and Trevion Lucas, 20, both from Pueblo, were fatally shot just after midnight Friday near Sailboard Beach on the north side of the lake, according to a Monday news release from the CBI. The suspect, an unknown male, got into an alleged argument and physical fight with Courtney before shooting him with a handgun, according to investigators.

During the Colorado Rapids’ 4-1 win over CF Montréal on Saturday, multiple signs and tifos backing defender Moïse Bombito were scattered around the stands, particularly behind the south goal, where the Centennial 38 supporters group is located. The show of support for Bombito, who is Black and also plays for the Canadian men’s national team, came after he became the target of racist harassment on social media last week following a Copa America match last Thursday against Argentina. Bombito tackled Inter Miami star and World Cup champion Lionel Messi during that match while tracking back to stop an Argentinian attack on goal.

Ouray’s embattled police chief was fired Monday after six months on paid administrative leave because of his “poor work performance, violations of state law and other actions inappropriate for the Chief of Police,” according to city officials.
