A promising start for the motorcyclists did not last during the 95th running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Foggy conditions turned into pea-sized hail at about 2 p.m. on the summit of Pikes Peak and the race officials cut the 12.42-mile race in half for the final five racers. Safety concerns centered on the hail, which made road conditions treacherous for cars equipped with racing slicks — tires with little or no tread to grip the road. Early conditions allowed four motorcycle and two car records to be set.
