Wgn Show 'salem' Lacks Magic

WGN America, the Chicago "superstation," joins the mad dash into the world of original content with a new dramatic series called "Salem," premiering Sunday. The series, created and written by Brannan Braga and Adam Simon, begins in 1685 as young John Alden (Shane West) is saying goodbye to his girlfriend, Mary (Janet Montgomery), before he goes off to fight Indians. The couple are trying to be discreet since canoodling is punishable by an overnight stay in the village stocks and having the letter "F" branded onto your forehead. Wade is still a few centuries off, Mary's pal Tituba (Ashley Madekwe) arranges to take care of her problem, with the aid of a magic spell, some gooey black stuff emanating from an undulating tree and snaking up Mary's legs, and a handful of oozing demons in need of a lecture on good dental hygiene. [...] he wasn't, shows up and starts right in griping about people like Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel), calling for a witch hunt to rid the town of evil.
