Thomson slowly rolls over Baldwin

THOMSON — It took a little longer than usual to get rolling, but Thomson’s offensive avalanche eventually buried visiting Baldwin 45-0 on Friday night at The Brickyard.
After scoring 73 and 70 points in its previous two games, the No. 2 Bulldogs endured a scoreless first quarter and led only 3-0 late in the first half against a Braves team that was determined to eat up clock and contain Thomson’s weapons as much as possible.

 

AU surpasses fundraising goal

 
Augusta University announced Friday it surpassed its $1 million fundraising goal for the second consecutive year.
 
The 2016 IGIVE campaign raised $1,033,490, university officials told those gathered at the Augusta U Brew-N-Que on campus. IGIVE is an annual campaign for giving to Augusta University and its health system.

Woman sought in August threat

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help in finding Brandi Ann Reece, 1300 block of Maddox Road.
According to a bulletin, she has an active warrant for terroristic threats and acts in an incident that took place Aug. 9 in the 3500 block of Kindling Drive. She is described as 5-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 102 pounds.

Authorities believe Langley couple's death homicide/suicide

Aiken County officials believe a Langley-area man took a woman’s life at least a week before dying from an apparent overdose.
While conducting a wellness check around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aiken County deputies entered a home at 38 Jackson St. and discovered two bodies.
Coroner Tim Carlton identified the two today as Sheryl B. Stone, 47, and William Howard Boyd, 66, who lived together at the residence.

 

Augusta man sentenced to prison for child molestation

An Augusta man whose father served time in prison for child molestation was sentenced to prison Friday for aggravated child molestation.
Carl I. Double, 26, pleaded guilty in Richmond County Superior Court, admitting on Oct. 21, 2015, he molested a 10-year-old girl.
Judge Daniel J. Craig sentenced Double to 35 years in prison. Once released, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

Run to honor fallen service members begins first day

Three blank dog tags jingled against the chest of Sgt. Willie Jennings as he ran the first lap of a non-stop 10-day run honoring the fallen.
Each dog tag represents a body that didn’t make it home. By the end of the run, which will continue 24 hours a day rain or shine, the runners will represent more than 1,500 Marines or Navy personnel who died in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Police arrest homeless man for prank calls

Police have arrested a homeless man they said repeatedly made prank calls to 911 while moaning into the phone.
Miller Abrams, 30, was booked into the Columbia County jail Wednesday on a charge of unlawful conduct during a 911 call after deputies found him with the cell phone used in the pranks. He is also being held for another law enforcement agency.

Cancer center director resigns

Augusta University on Friday announced Dr. Samir N. Khleif has resigned as director of the Georgia Cancer Center.
Khleif joined the cancer center in 2012. He previously held positions at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., where he served as medical oncology fellow, senior investigator, and chief of the Cancer Vaccine Section.
Following a year of educational and professional leave, Khleif will return to his faculty position in the university’s medical school.

 

Fatal hit-and-run suspect in custody

The driver suspected in the hit-and-run death of a Columbia County jogger has been taken into custody.
 
According to a statement from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Michael Cheek, 38, of the 600 block of Laurel Place, Martinez, is in the Aiken County jail facing charges of vehicular homicide in the first degree, hit and run, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.
He is charged in the death of Timothy Smith, of Wheeler Road, who was struck while running along the highway about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Juvenile charged in car jump death

ROME, Ga. — A police spokesman says a juvenile has been charged in the death of another Georgia teen after a game called “jump the car” turned deadly.

Jerome Poole, a spokesman for the Floyd County Police Department, tells the Rome News-Tribune an unidentified juvenile was charged Thursday with felony vehicular homicide, reckless driving and violation of his provisional license.

Poole says a complete report will be available Friday morning.
