Cookie dough recall underway

GARNER, Iowa — An Iowa company is recalling the cookie dough it sold to Blue Bell Creameries and other food companies because it may be contaminated with listeria bacteria.

Dough-maker Aspen Hills notified customers about the recall on Sunday, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether any of this cookie dough had reached consumers because the Garner, Iowa, based company doesn’t sell directly to consumers. Aspen Hills did not say the companies or states where the dough was sold.

 

Sheriff's office quiet about recent murder arrest

Police are releasing few details on a recent arrest for murder, but warrants have confirmed it is connected to a May case.
Shakara Shanese Harden, 28, was booked into the Richmond County jail Friday on charges of murder and criminal attempt. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has declined to comment on the case, stating only that the case remains under investigation.
According to warrants, Harden is accused in the armed robbery and death of Marcus Mandrell Scott on May 24.

 

Local candidates speak tonight

The public is invited to hear candidates at tonight's meeting of the Augusta Richmond County Committee for Good Government.
Candidates for Richmond County sheriff and Richmond County school board districts 1, 4 and 10 have been invited to speak. Each will be given three minutes, and  the political group plans to make endorsements afterward.
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Julian Smith Barbecue Pit at 87 Milledge Road.  Candidates will begin speaking at 7 p.m.
 
 

 

Storm passes, now look out for scams

Officials warn those facing storm damage or other effects from Hurricane Matthew should be wary of individuals who might pose as inspectors, government officials, volunteers or contractors as the cleanup process begins.
Such deceptions pose dangers as they might attempt to obtain personal information, which could be used to steal an identity or collect payment for disaster assistance or repairs.

Commission tour results in $200,000 list of riverwalk repairs

City officials are proposing an additional $200,000 for repairs and a possible site-specific master plan for Riverwalk Augusta.
The repairs are items compiled by Recreation Director Glenn Parker during a June walk-through with the Augusta Commission, the mayor and city staff. They range from removing pigeon droppings and painting a fence to making amphitheater seats compatible with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

 

Volunteers report problems at Augusta evacuee shelter

As the last of about 2,500 Hurricane Matthew evacuees left on buses Monday back to Savannah, some volunteers were saying the experience was disorganized and unfriendly at one Augusta shelter.
The volunteers, part of a group of around 25 T.W. Josey High School alumni, pointed to a single Red Cross volunteer and a small group of discontented evacuees – one of whom posted a video, later removed, on Face­book – as causing most of the trouble.

 

North Augustans to line street to honor girl, family

North Augustans are being urged to dress in green and line Georgia Avenue on Wednesday, as the funeral procession for Ella Kate Bumgardner leaves First Baptist Church.
Ella, the 10-year-old daughter of Jeff Bumgardner, the worship minister at First Baptist, and his wife Jody, died Friday after suffering a brain aneurysm.

NA police seeking Johnston man in Sunday shooting

North Augusta police are seeking a Johnston man in the shooting of another man at a Bradleyville Road apartment complex Sunday morning.
Garrick Campbell, 25, is wanted on charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Woods announces he won't play this week

 
Tiger Woods announced today that he would not be returning to the PGA Tour this week as he announced last week.
“After a lot of soul searching and honest reflection, I know that I am not yet ready to play on the PGA Tour or compete in Turkey. My health is good, and I feel strong, but my game is vulnerable and not where it needs to be,” Woods said in a statement on his website.
