D-B girls, Boone boys slog to Run for the Hills titles

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The annual Run for the Hills meet, traditionally the kickoff to cross country season in the area, features one of the toughest courses around.
On Saturday morning, the course in the shadow of South Holston Dam became even tougher — even a quagmire. The mud and sloshy ground made for slow times and had a “real” cross country feel like the sport has in Europe.
Emerging with team titles were Daniel Boone’s boys and Dobyns-Bennett’s girls.

 

Human remains found in Scott County

WEBER CITY — Officers with the Virginia State Police are investigating after human remains were found Sunday near Wadlow Bridge off Wadlow Gap Road in Scott County.
State police said authorities out of the Wytheville Field Office were called to the scene at 4:43 p.m.
The body was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke for examination, autopsy and positive identification, and the investigation is ongoing.

 

K-Mets sweep Jays, move into wild-card tie

KINGSPORT — Five pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout to keep Kingsport in the thick of the Appalachian League playoff race.
Starter Jordany Ventura threw four innings of no-hit ball and the K-Mets took a 3-0 win over Bluefield on Sunday at Hunter Wright Stadium.
On the heels of the three-game sweep of the Blue Jays (30-34), the K-Mets (33-32) are a half-game behind West Division-leading Bristol in the standings and tied with Johnson City in the wild-card race.
Hector Rodriguez (3-2) gave up a hit and two walks over two innings in notching the win.

 

Mrs. Nancy Lilley Dearstone

JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Nancy Lilley Dearstone, age 73, Jonesborough, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mrs. Dearstone was born in Washington County, TN and the daughter of Sarah Buckingham Lilley, Jonesborough and the late Carroll Lilley.
She was a member of Erwin Church of Christ.
Mrs. Dearstone was a Chartered Organizational Representative and Committee Chairperson for Boy Scout Troop #134 of Jonesborough for many years. She was a volunteered at Jonesborough Middle School.

 

'Unashamed' prayer rally draws thousands to downtown Kingsport

KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Farmers Market pavilion was overflowing Saturday evening with prayer and Christian songs as thousands of people representing dozens of local churches showed they are “Unashamed” to share their faith.
An exact head count wasn’t available, but some in attendance estimated there were at least a couple of thousand people at the first ever Unashamed Prayer Rally.

 

Carnival Cafe's 4.5 pound Philly Cheese Steak Challenge claims two victims

ROGERSVILLE — Two challengers separated by 43 years in age took on their own 4.5 pound mountain of Philly Cheese Steak Saturday, with similar results.
Despite their age difference, 15-year-old Cody Keen and 58-year-old Phillip Braim have a few things things in common.
Both are involved in highly physical calorie burning activities. Keen plays football for Cherokee High School, and Braim is a fitness enthusiast, as well as a tree cutter with Asplundh Tree Expert LLC.
They’re both also big fans of Carnival Cafe, located on Highway 11-W on the western outskirts of Rogersville.

Colonial Heights United Methodist Church cooking class a big hit

KINGSPORT — Before the summer, sixth-grader Aaron Blair didn’t know much about cooking.
He was familiar with the measurements used in food preparation, but had limited experience with making a dish from start to finish. That all changed when he decided to attend a summer cooking class at Colonial Heights United Methodist Church, of which he is a member.
After five weekly sessions, Blair now knows how to prepare several dishes and is much more confident in the kitchen.
“I did have fun, and class was amazing,” Blair said.

Great Body Company works to stop injuries before they can happen

KINGSPORT — Kingsport firefighter John Lufi has been dealing with some physical issues — injuries both recent and from before he started working for the city.
A month or two ago, he got hit in the head, which jerked all the muscles in his back. Prior to coming to Kingsport, Lufi dislocated his shoulder and was never able to finish therapy. His muscles were cramping, giving him headaches and taking a toll on him.
But now, with the help of a new preventative medical wellness program at the Great Body Company, Lufi is getting some relief for his niggling injuries.
