Companies jump in to help people amid shutdown

About 800,000 federal workers are about to miss their first checks in a partial government shutdown that’s now poised to become the longest in U.S. history. Among staff who won’t get paid Friday are law enforcement officers, NASA engineers and office workers across the country.
Some large corporations are jumping in to give a financial break to those workers — who are also their customers.
Here’s the rundown:

Girls basketball: Washougal 90, Hockinson 58

McKinley Stotts scored 21 points, Beyonce Bea added 16 and the quick-starting Panthers won a 2A Greater St. Helens League game on the road.
Washougal (9-4, 4-0) scored 29 points in both the first and second quarters to lead 58-22 at halftime.
“They basically came in and punched us right in the face.,” Hockinson coach Damon Roche said. “We didn’t respond until the second half.”
Meggie Kistler led the Hawks with 15 points off the bench. Hockinson (7-6, 2-3) had 26 steals, but also 32 turnovers.
