Girls basketball: Heritage 42, Battle Ground 24

Ryan Isam scored eight of her game-high 14 points in the third quarter as the Timberwolves broke open a close game for a 4A Greater St. Helens League win at home.
Heritage (5-10, 1-3) outscored Battle Ground 17-2 in the third after leading 17-16 at halftime.
Katherine Peneueta had 12 points and 13 rebounds for Heritage. Sarah Rosenbaum added 12 rebounds.
Megan Geiger and Brianna Adams each scored eight points for Battle Ground (4-9, 0-3).

Payten Foster had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Beavers.

Sergio Hunt and Kahlil Singleton paced the Trappers with 15 points each.

Ashley Brannan scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter, when the Bulldogs took control in a Trico League road win.
Stevenson (9-4, 2-1) outscored the Rockets 25-8 in the third quarter after leading 27-26 at halftime. Jazmine Morat scored eight of her 10 points the third.
Brannan, who hit four 3-pointers, also had seven rebounds. Katie Rathgeber had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Brooke Wirkkala and Rachel Anderson each scored 12 points for Castle Rock (5-7, 0-3).

Charges: Man assaulted lesbian Vancouver couple at Seahawks game

SEATTLE — A 34-year-old Tacoma man has been accused of harassing and assaulting a married same-sex couple from Vancouver for their sexual orientation at a Seahawks football game.
SeattlePI.com reported Jay Dee Harp III was charged last week with assault and malicious harassment, which is Washington’s hate crime statute.
He posted bail, but a King County Superior Court judge has since increased his bail and issued a warrant for his arrest.
Police say Harp harassed two women at CenturyLink Field in Seattle Dec. 30, making comments that included anti-gay slurs.

Prairie led 20-4 after one quarter and cruised to a 3A Greater St. Helens League win.
Brooke Walling scored 14 points to lead four Falcons in double figures. Fellow seniors Mallory Williams and Cassidy Gardner each scored 12 points for Prairie (11-1, 4-0).
“In my three years at Mountain View, this is the best team Prairie has had,” coach Dave McIntosh said. “Their seniors are so solid.”
Jenna Carlson scored nine points for Mountain View (3-11, 2-2).

Affirmative action initiative gains steam

Supporters of an initiative that would re-legalize affirmative action in Washington say they’ve collected enough petition signatures to send their measure to the Legislature this year.
The Initiative 1000 campaign on Jan. 4 submitted more than 387,000 signatures to the secretary of state’s office, said Jesse Wineberry, a former state lawmaker working on the campaign. About 260,000 valid signatures are required to qualify an initiative.
In an interview, Wineberry said the measure has “really resonated with people,” particularly younger voters.

 

Report says FBI probed whether Trump secretly worked for Russians

WASHINGTON — Law enforcement officials became so concerned by President Donald Trump’s behavior in the days after he fired FBI Director James Comey that they began investigating whether he had been working for Russia against U.S. interests, The New York Times reported Friday.
The report cites unnamed former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation.

 

Air traffic controllers sue Trump

WASHINGTON — The National Air Traffic Controllers Association filed a lawsuit Friday against President Donald Trump and other top federal officials, saying they are depriving controllers of their “hard-earned compensation without the requisite due process.”
Controllers across the country started seeing pay stubs Thursday showing that they are receiving no pay for their work guiding planes to airports nationwide.
