Girls basketball: La Center 64, Columbia-White Salmon 25

Hot shooting from the perimeter powered the Wildcats to a 1A Trico League win at home.
Taylor Stephens scored 23 points and made six of La Center’s 15 3-pointers. Mia Edwards added 17 points and made five 3-pointers.
Freshman Kylee Stephens had 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists for La Center (5-7, 3-0). Sierra Frasier led the Wildcats with eight rebounds.
Bailey Gimlin scored 11 points to lead the Bruins (6-8, 0-3).

Toyota recalls 1.7M vehicles in N. America to fix air bags

DETROIT — Toyota is recalling 1.7 million vehicles in North America to replace potentially deadly Takata front passenger air bag inflators.
The move announced this week includes 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. and is part of the largest series of automotive recalls in the nation’s history.
Takata inflators can explode with too much force and hurl shrapnel into drivers and passengers. At least 23 people have been killed worldwide and hundreds have been injured.

 

Schnitzer Steel reports $16.2M for first quarter

PORTLAND — Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc. this week reported fiscal first-quarter net income of $16.2 million.
The Portland-based company said it had profit of 57 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for restructuring costs and to account for discontinued operations, were 58 cents per share.
The recycler of ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal posted revenue of $564 million in the period.
Schnitzer Steel shares have risen 7 percent since the beginning of the year. The stock has dropped 39 percent in the last 12 months.
 

 

U.S. restaurant prices jump the most since 2011

Washington — It’s getting more expensive to eat out.
Full-service restaurants, facing higher labor and food costs, raised prices the most in more than seven years in December, a Labor Department report released Friday shows.
As grocery costs rise at a slower pace, that could push more U.S. consumers to eat at home, potentially shifting sales away from sit-down chains like Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, operated by parent company Darden Restaurants.

 

Police search for stabbing suspect in downtown Vancouver

Police are searching for a stabbing suspect after a transient man was stabbed by another man Friday evening outside the Plaid Pantry in downtown Vancouver.
First responders were dispatched about 5:50 p.m. to the store at 514 Washington St.
The victim suffered a small wound to the back of his neck and was transported to a hospital for treatment, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said.
