It hasn’t been a great week for certainty about the future of the Avalanche roster. The Avs already had one key player — captain Gabe Landeskog — whose future contributions remain in question due to a long-term injury. But Valeri Nichushkin’s suspension and mandated return to the NHL-NHLPA Player Assistance Program has left Colorado with two of its highest-paid players as significant question marks for the 2024-25 season and beyond. One position on the roster where the Avs have significantly fewer questions than they did at the start of this season is the most important one.

A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder Friday for starting a house fire that killed five people in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood nearly four years ago. Kevin Bui agreed to serve 60 years in prison as part of his plea agreement, though he will not be sentenced until July 2.

A Telluride man has been sentenced to a year and one day in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge for participating in the Jan. 6 breach of the U. S. Capitol, the Department of Justice announced Friday. Avery MacCracken, 70, pleaded guilty to felony obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder last year after he and others disrupted a joint session of Congress convened to count the votes from the 2020 presidential election, according to a news release. The Commerce City street racer who shot and killed another driver on Interstate 70 when that driver attempted to pass an ongoing race was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday. Jeremy Rocha, 22, will be sentenced to life in prison after jurors found him guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder in the killing of 37-year-old John Jaros on June 18, 2022. Jurors unanimously rejected Rocha’s claim that he shot at Jaros’ vehicle in self-defense. Rocha opened fire as Jaros drove on I-70 with his wife and three children just west of Exit 288, near the intersection with East Colfax Avenue, in Aurora. Investigators said Rocha and three other drivers were blocking traffic on I-70 so that Rocha could race his Mustang — which he had bought earlier that day — against one of the other drivers.

The best Colorado campground you never saw might be a remote spot on BLM land at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo range near Great Sand Dunes National Park, 35 miles north of the New Mexico border. At least that’s how one might envision the Sacred White Shell Mountain campground after reading about it on a list of 10 best places to camp in the mountain west that was assembled by The Dyrt, a popular camping website and app with millions of visitors annually. Sacred White Shell Mountain rated second on the list, which was derived from users of The Dyrt, and was one of two in Colorado to make the list.
