Spanish architecture firm Valentín Arrieta Berdasco has recently completed the Pino-Roble House, an architecturally striking home that combines a historic stone facade with a contemporary new build. Completed in 2019, the residence is located in Canicosa de la Sierra. This municipality within the province of Burgos is home to a natural monument called “Pino-Roble,” a pine tree that grows inside a centenary oak that has become a symbol of the village.
An updated list released by the Australian government has confirmed the extinction of 13 endemic species. Among the species are 12 mammals and one reptile. The news now makes Australia the leading country globally in terms of mammal extinctions. Currently, more than 10% of the 320 land mammals that lived in Australia by 1788 are now extinct.
The list is led by the recent extinctions of two species from Christmas Island, including the Christmas Island forest skink, the first reptile to go extinct since the European colonization of Australia.
As climate change worsens, spring temperatures come earlier in the year, cueing tree swallows to build their nests sooner. This leaves baby swallows vulnerable as the inevitable cold snap happens.
“It’s getting warmer overall. They’re thinking, OK, it’s a good time to breed, to lay my eggs,” said Lily Twining of the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior in Germany.

But late-season cold snaps can still happen.
Made using an upcycled, discarded shipping container and featuring its own personal wind turbine, three solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system, the Gaia off-grid container house embodies self sufficiency. The architects at Pin-Up Houses, who are responsible for the project, said that they were inspired to find alternative forms of housing with less environmental impact.
Thanks to its off-grid technology, the Gaia is a completely independent housing unit.
European design firm Mask Architects has shared renderings of a proposed luxury villa that resembles a white, seaside café. Informed by local Sardinian architecture and digital modeling software, the project — dubbed the Villa G01 “Rock and Cave” special — has been proposed for one of the most exclusive areas of Northern Sardinia and celebrates indoor/outdoor living with a massive garden, spacious terraces and openings that offer panoramic views of the sea.
Mask Architects’ Villa G01 is a new interpretation of the sculptural buildings designed by Jacques Couëlle, a self-taught French architect who was nicknamed “the architect of billionaires” after his luxurious and fanciful designs made from carved concrete.
