Goldman Sachs Earnings Q2 2012: Goldman's Profit Falls

Goldman Sachs says its net income fell 11 percent in the April-to-June period after the investment bank's clients made fewer deals and avoided volatility in global financial markets. The New York bank said its net income fell to $962 million, or $1.78 per share, for the quarter. That compares with $1.09 billion, or $1.85 per share, a year ago. It's also far more than the $1.17 per share that analysts were expecting.

Jeff Bezos’ net worth jumped $2.7 billion to $21.5 billion on Friday, the first trading day after Amazon surprised investors with stronger than expected earnings on Thursday after the market closed. Net income for the quarter was 28 cents a share, quadruple the Street consensus at 7 cents, as reported by my colleague Eric Savitz. Net sales increased 34% to $13.18 billion in the first quarter. The stock jumped $30.9, or 15.8%, in one day.

itigroup's strategy of slimming down and focusing on a few core businesses is paying off. The New York bank reported third quarter earnings rose 74 percent in the third quarter, to $3.8 billion, due to lower losses from loans and an accounting gain. Its international consumer lending business grew in Asia and Latin America. The bank also decided to keep its credit card partnership with retailers as that business improved.

Senh: I was wondering what "accounting gain" meant. It sounds like one of those abstract accounting practices that gets companies in trouble. But apparently all that meant was that the value of their liabilities are lower, and they have to report that as a gain. It sounds like a one-off though, and not something they can reproduce over time.
