Barbara Kim Stanton, Hawaii state director of AARP, says that employers should have more discussions on ways to support employees who are taking on family caregiver roles. There are about 247,000 estimated caregivers in Hawaii providing about $2 billion in unpaid care per year. Hawaii’s rapidly aging population is being met by a shrinking pool of caregivers and rising costs of long-term care, which is placing more emphasis on helping Hawaii’s elderly live independently.
