Iran to send flight recorders from downed jet to Ukraine

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran will send the black box flight recorders from the Ukrainian jetliner that it accidentally shot down last week to Ukraine for further analysis, an Iranian official said Saturday.

Hassan Rezaeifer, the head of accident investigations for the civil aviation department, said it was not possible to read the black boxes in Iran, without elaborating.

 

Justices taking up bans on state money to religious schools

WASHINGTON – A Supreme Court that seems more favorable to religion-based discrimination claims is set to hear a case that could make it easier to use public money to pay for religious schooling in many states.

The justices will hear arguments Wednesday in a dispute over a Montana scholarship program for private K-12 education that also makes donors eligible for up to $150 in state tax credits.

Thousands gather for Women's March rallies across the US

WASHINGTON – Thousands gathered in cities across the country Saturday as part of the nationwide Women's March rallies focused on issues such as climate change, pay equity, reproductive rights and immigration.

Hundreds showed up in New York City and thousands in Washington, D.C. for the rallies, which aim to harness the political power of women, although crowds were noticeably smaller than in previous years.

 

McHenry County hit by up to 5 inches of snow, plummeting temperatures to follow

Northeastern portions of McHenry County saw around 5 inches of snow fall on Friday night and are expected to experience gusts of up to 50 mph through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The counties of McHenry, Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, Lee and DeKalb are under a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m.

 

Time to 'rise up and leverage our privilege,' Woodstock Women's March attendees told

Anna Buckingham of Crystal Lake said she had not planned to attend a Women's March held in the Woodstock Square on Saturday, but when her 5-year-old daughter, Carolina – who had read about women's suffrage – had other plans.

"She has a book about women's suffrage so she wanted to make sure everyone gets out to vote," Buckingham said.

The pair joined roughly 200 other attendees in below freezing weather for Woodstock's Women's March on the Square, 121 W.

 

Culver's restaurant opens in Fox River Grove

The Culver’s occupying the former Villa Bleu and Mr. Beefy’s site opened to the public Monday in Fox River Grove.

Owner Barry Himmelfarb said that, so far, business has been “great” and the restaurant has been busy. The eatery opened at 10 a.m. Monday.

“The community has been coming out and supporting us, and we appreciate that,” Himmelfarb said. “They’ve been very patient with us; they complimented us on the building, the beautiful patio.

 

Police continue search for missing woman at Starved Rock State Park

Police continue to search Starved Rock State Park after a missing persons investigation led them there.

Tina Donovan, of Ottawa, was reported missing to the Ottawa Police Department by a family member about 4 p.m. Tuesday, and a vehicle owned by Donovan was located in the Starved Rock Lodge parking area as a result of the investigation.
