Head of UA honors college resigning; she will be among several top administrators hired by former president Scarborough to leave

Another top administrator hired by the embattled former University of Akron President Scott Scarborough is leaving.Lakeesha Ransom, vice provost and dean of the Drs. Gary B and Pamela S. Williams Honors College, has submitted her resignation, effective Dec. 31.Ransom, who came to UA in 2015 from the University of Toledo, where Scarborough had served as provost, was paid an annual salary of $226,000.She will help the university in its “leadership transition,” UA said in a prepared statement issued Tuesday.

 

Jury finds Cleveland man guilty of murder in shooting death in robbery-gone-wrong in Green; Trent Turner faces life in prison

Three people identified Trent Turner as the shooter in a drug-robbery-gone bad that left a Green man dead in November 2015.Turner’s defense attorneys, though, claimed the trio was motivated by self-interest or influenced by racial bias and social media images.The witnesses’ word, though, was enough to convince a Summit County jury of Turner’s guilt.

 

Father accidentally shoots 6-year-old son in leg in Akron

A father accidentally shot his 6-year-old son in the leg early Tuesday morning, Akron police say.The boy was treated at an area hospital for a minor injury, as the bullet grazed his leg.Authorities responded to the 700 block of Alicia Walk in the city’s East Akron neighborhood at 12:30 a.m. for a call about a shooting. The parents denied any knowledge at first about how the boy was shot, but the 38-year-old father later admitted that he had the gun and it accidentally went off.Authorities are investigating to see if charges will be filed.

Authorities capture Akron man accused of stealing $75,000 in cash

An Akron man wanted in connection with the theft of about $75,000 in cash has been captured by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.

Derrick Whatley, 33, was arrested Monday near the 800 block of Fess Avenue in Akron after a tip.

He was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and Akron police on aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary charges.

Whatley is accused of walking into a West Hill apartment on May 26, strangling and hitting a 50-year-old woman in the face with a gun and stealing the money.

 

On the lam: Authorities offer reward for capture of Akron murder suspect

The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force is offering a reward for information leading to the capture of Malik Shabazz Baldwin of Akron.

He is accused of murder following a June 6 shooting that took place outside a home in the 800 block of Sumner Street. LeMichael Stevenson, 24, who was on the front porch, was killed.

Baldwin, 26, is described as a black man about 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

His last known address was in Akron near Fairbanks Place. He is still believed to be in the Akron area.

 

State Rep. Patton to run for 16th Congressional District seat

STRONGVILLE: State Rep. Tom Patton is seeking the Republican nomination for Ohio’s 16th Congressional District.Patton, 63, of Strongsville who serves as majority whip in the Ohio House, made the announcement this week. He previously served eight years in the Ohio Senate.

 

How sweet it is: Malley’s Chocolates to open first store in Stark County

Cost of Main Street Corridor project doubles

City engineers on Monday released computer renderings for the Main Street Corridor. The images — produced by architects at GPD Group — show two-way traffic in two lanes, down from four in some parts, with left-hand turning lanes from Exchange Street all the way north to Mill Street, where landscaped islands will be brought forward to define the edges of a roundabout wrapping a perfect circle of grass and brick.
