Huntley Police arrest homeless man who threatened to bomb 'the school,' 'harm others'

A homeless man was arrested after personnel at Huntley Community School District 158 told police about a threat he posted to bomb the school.

On Facebook, the Huntley Police Department posted that district employees told them on Friday evening about the threatening social media post.

Winter storm hits McHenry County with 'messy' roads

Waves of snow and ice have moved out of the area, and a developing secondary snowstorm was moving in quickly Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service in Romeoville.

In total, about 2 to 4 inches of snow was expected to accumulate in McHenry, Lake and Kane counties. Periods of moderate to occasionally heavy snow was expected to fall from 7 to 11 p.m.

 

New law ensures McHenry County Jail detainees are offered chance to vote

A law that took effect Jan. 1 will grant easier voting access to residents detained at the McHenry County Jail.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Clerk’s Office began making preparations for inmate voting shortly after Gov. JB Pritzker signed Senate Bill 2090 in August.

 

Cary computer shop burglarized again, police say

Cary police officers discovered Saturday morning that three men forced their way into a business and stole electronics worth about $7,800, according to the Cary Police Department.

Officers responded about 5:24 a.m. to a burglar alarm that was activated at Cary Grove Computers, 115 E. Main St.

 

Women's March in Woodstock to highlight importance of voting in 2020 election

McHenry County and members of the local chapter of the National Organization of Women are organizing a Women’s March next week on the Woodstock Square.

The march is slated to be one of hundreds to occur nationwide Saturday, commemorating the 2017 Women’s March on Washington.

March organizers said they believe the 2020 election may well be the most important of their lifetimes, and the march is tied to the importance of voting in this year’s elections.

McHenry School District 15 to compete for top STEM program in nation

For the second year in a row, McHenry School District 15 is being recognized by the Future of Education Technology Conference as having one of the top science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs in the nation. 

This year, Parkland School has been selected as a finalist for the Future of Education Technology Conference STEM Excellence Award.

“We were honored to be recognized nationally last year, and ecstatic to be a finalist again this year,” District 15 Superintendent Alan Hoffman said.

 

Folk group February Sky to perform Sunday at McHenry County College

The folk singing group February Sky is scheduled to perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at McHenry County College.

The performance will be in the Luecht Auditorium, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake.

Trout Lake, Michigan-based February Sky features traditional singer and Celtic guitarist Phil Cooper and singer-songwriter Susan Urban. Cooper sings and plays his own arrangements of traditional songs on a six-string guitar and cittern. He also interprets carefully chosen songs from the best of modern folk song writers.

 

Lake in the Hills businesses honored as 2019 Gordon Larsen award winners

Four Lake in the Hills businesses were recipients of the 2019 Gordon Larsen Business Achievements Awards.

The awards began in 2004 as a tribute to Lake in the Hills resident Gordon Larsen, who Village President Russ Ruzanski said was influential in paving the physical and civic landscape of the village.

This year, Lake in the Hills received 440 nominations for more than 30 businesses.

Northwestern Medicine hospitals restricting visitors during flu season

DeKALB – Two area hospitals have started putting restrictions on patient visitors in order to cut down exposure to the flu, according to a Northwestern Medicine news release.

Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee and Northwestern Medicine Valley West hospitals have set visitor guidelines, which include: visitors with flu-like symptoms refraining from seeing a patient in the hospital or accompanying a patient to a clinic visit, visitors younger than 18 years old will not be permitted to visit patients in the hospital, with an exception for parents younger than

 

Woodstock native ready for debut of feature film 'Chasing Nightmares'

WOODSTOCK – In less than two years, Woodstock native Chris McGowan went from a screenwriting contest winner to full-fledged Hollywood director; he recently wrapped his first official full-length feature, “Chasing Nightmares.”

With hopes of a spring release, “Chasing Nightmares” boasts a cast of actors that includes Anne Heche, Graham McTavish and Michelle Randolph.
