'Inception' steals weekend with $60.4 mil

'Inception' steals weekend with $60.4 mil

Leonardo DiCaprio's "Inception" is anything but a sleeper as the thriller opened big with $60.4 million and a No. 1 finish at the weekend boxoffice.

Senh: I'm surprised that The Sorcerer's Apprentice kinda tanked. It looks like an expensive film. Nicolas Cage looks kinda goofy in that role. Good to see Inception doing well, though. Christopher Nolan continues to draw audiences with his complex stories.

'Inception' is No. 1 on Friday: $21M

'Inception' is No. 1 on Friday: $21M

Christopher Nolan is having a fantastic Saturday. Jerry Bruckheimer is not. For the Dark Knight director scored over $21 million on Friday for his original, mind-bending film Inception. (That includes the $3 million brought in from the opening midnight shows.) The Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, could now earn $60 million for its three-day opening frame. That’s quite a contrast to The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Disney’s failed attempt to recreate the magic of The National Treasure franchise. The film from Treasure producer Bruckheimer, director Jon Turteltaub and star Nicolas Cage grossed an estimated $5 million on Friday for a weekend take that may just hit $15 million. The film opened on Wednesday but even those two days of grosses won’t help the film get much past $20 million for the five-day period.

Box Office: 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' can only conjure up $3.8 million Wednesday

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" opened to a dismal $3.8 million on Wednesday and the signs for the weekend aren't much better.

FIRST BOX OFFICE: 'Despicable Me' Could Be Good For $55M-$60M Weekend

FRIDAY 8 PM: (Numbers will be refined later tonight.)
... Despicable Me 3D today is translating into "amazing" attendance of $22 million for what could be a $55M-$60M weekend opening despite having two other 3D family films in the marketplace.

Senh: I was expecting a hit, but not this big of a hit. It does have an interesting and original premise and having Steve Carell voice the title character helps. Now Universal Pictures is officially in the animation game.

'Eclipse': Box office total hits $161M

'Eclipse': Box office total hits $161M

Sure, Twilight Saga: Eclipse dropped from its crazy opening day of $68.5 million, and yes, The Last Airbender has been destroyed by critics. Even so, the holiday weekend’s two new wide releases scored enough business to make this year’s Fourth of July box office bigger than what Ice Age 3 and Public Enemies brought in at this time last year.

Friday Box Office: 'Eclipse' $28.2M For New Cume Of $121M, 'The Last Airbender' $15.5M, 'Toy Story 3' $10.9M

Friday Box Office: 'Eclipse' $28.2M For New Cume Of $121M, 'The Last Airbender' $15.5M, 'Toy Story 3' $10.9M

1. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse looks like $28.2M Friday after making $24.2M Thursday and opening to $68.5M Wednesday from 4,416 dates for a new cume of $120.9M. That could be $77.5M for the 3-day weekend, and $110M for the 5 days with a total of $178M for the 6-day July Fourth Holiday since Wednesday. However, one rival studio thinks Eclipse can get to a record-shattering $187M for the 6-day holiday. Yowza! That would put the pic well ahead of Spider-Man 2 which holds the July 4th holiday record with $180M. Overseas, Summit says Eclipse has opened to $19M from 22 territories.
