Senior Day at Lake Metroparks Farmpark attracts hundreds with fishing 'fun,' special presentations

Man arraigned on firearms charge in Mentor

A Cleveland man arrested Sept. 12 by Mentor police faces multiple charges, including a felony firearms offense, following his arraignment Sept. 13 in Mentor Municipal Court, records there show.According to legal documents, 22-year-old Solomon E. Watters, who lives at 5701 Dibble Ave., is charged with fourth-degree felony improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, first-degree misdemeanor driving under suspension and one minor misdemeanor count each of speeding and not wearing a seat belt.

 

Man accused of assault in Mentor

A 34-year-old man arrested by Mentor police Sept. 12 was arraigned on numerous charges Sept. 13 in Mentor Municipal Court, including assaulting a public safety official, Mentor Municipal Court records state.Stephen D. Widdowson, whose court paperwork states has no fixed address, is charged with fourth-degree felony assault after being accused of attempting to cause harm to a police officer, firefighter or EMT.

Area school districts' receive 2018 Ohio School Report Card results

The Ohio Department of Education released its annual Ohio School Report Cards on Sept. 13 and the results for school districts' in the News-herald's coverage area varied greatly. For the first time, schools and districts were assigned an overall letter grade. The overall grade was calculated using results from six categories: achievement, progress, gap closing, improving at-risk K-3 readers, graduation rate and prepared for success.

Painesville railroad crossings to close

Norfolk Southern Railroad has notified the City of Painesville that the railroad crossings at Riverside Drive and Bank Street will be closed from 6 a.m. Sept. 17 through noon Sept. 23, for complete rail alignment.
